In the beginning...
Like most women, I struggled all my life with combining the fashion I loved with what actually worked well on my body. I was unsure of which colors looked best on me (my Mom swore for years that bright pink was my color) and I was certain I could never look as good as the fashion models in the magazines.
I began to be interested in fashion at age 17 when I worked as a receptionist in a hair salon. Fashion and hair are tightly woven together and before long I was hooked. I spent the next five years in the hair industry and eventually became a makeup artist. During this time I experimented with many different fashion trends but never did feel "sure" that any of them actually made me look better.
The bump in the fashion road...
Fast forward to 2005. I was no longer in the hair or fashion world. I was in marketing, running my own company. I had a baby a couple years earlier and was overweight, unhappy and needed a change. I was so fashionably defunct at this time, my entire closet was filled with baggy sweats, hoodies, jeans and a wide assortment of black boots resembling the combat variety. I got motivated and by the end of the year, I had lost 60 lbs. and was excited to embrace the world of fashion again.
During my first shopping trip with my new body, I found myself in the middle of Casual Corner completely confused. I did not know how to dress this new body and I needed help. As a graphic designer, I had an eye for color and shape but I could not translate this into fashion. The salesperson managed to help me find an outfit that day, but I was determined to learn how to find clothes that worked best on my shape.
embraced by the fashion gods...
For the next year, I watched EVERY fashion show on television, read EVERY fashion book I could find and began to understand shape, silhouette, color, fabrics, texture and more. I was IN LOVE with fashion again! And this time, I understood it! (I also discovered that I had a PASSION for shoes, especially animal prints!)
The real test of what I learned came in the next few years as I gained back some of the weight I lost. I was worried that it was easier to dress my smaller body and that if I every gained back some of the weight, I could not feel as good as about myself as I did. Well, I worried for nothing! I was able to dress every incarnation of my body through weight gains and losses. I am comfortable at any size and know I can look great. (okay, yes I would like to lose 10 to 15 pounds, but I am not putting off "looking good" until I do).
In the process of learning how to dress my own body, I learned about other body shapes and how to dress them too. I realized that I was not passionate about fashion for fashion's sake, but rather I wanted to help as many women as I could so that they too could have the same epiphany about themselves as I had about myself.
After professional training in color consultation and image consulting, I started 180 Image so I could help women "turn their image around."
